PM Modi Hails India’s 7.8% GDP Growth Amid Global Economic Uncertainty

India's economy has delivered a strong start to the financial year, recording 7.8% GDP growth in the April–June quarter of FY 2026–27. The figure came in above many expectations and has given the government a fresh reason to highlight the country's economic resilience.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the growth as a major achievement, saying it reflected the collective strength of the Indian people despite a difficult global environment. He pointed to challenges such as rising oil prices, supply-chain disruptions and wider international uncertainty.

The 7.8% growth rate was also stronger than the 7.1% forecast in a Reuters poll and above the Reserve Bank of India's 7% estimate for the quarter. Strong consumer spending and a rise in private investment were among the important factors supporting the economy.

Manufacturing performed particularly well, growing by 9.2%, while financial services also recorded strong expansion. Private-sector capital expenditure rose significantly, suggesting that businesses are becoming more confident about investing in areas such as infrastructure, technology and manufacturing.

PM Modi congratulated the country on the result and said the numbers reflected growing economic confidence. In his message, he described the performance as evidence of India's ability to continue growing even when global conditions remain challenging.

However, challenges still remain. India is heavily dependent on imported crude oil, meaning higher global oil prices could put pressure on inflation and household expenses. A weaker rupee and geopolitical tensions could also affect the economy in the coming months.

For now, though, the latest GDP figures have provided a positive picture of India's economic momentum. The real test will be whether this growth can continue through the rest of the financial year while the global economy remains uncertain.
