Supreme Court Panel Submits Roadmap for Modernisation of Courts Across India
The Supreme Court’s push to modernise judicial infrastructure across India has taken an important step forward, with the Judicial Infrastructure Advisory Committee submitting its interim roadmap for improving courts across the country.
The high-powered committee was constituted under Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and is headed by Supreme Court Justice Aravind Kumar. Its main responsibility is to prepare a comprehensive blueprint for addressing infrastructure gaps and supporting the modernisation of the country’s judicial system.
The committee is examining the condition and requirements of courts at different levels, including facilities for judges, lawyers, court staff, litigants and visitors. A major focus of the plan is expected to be the development of modern court complexes and better working environments that can improve the overall functioning of the justice delivery system.
Technology is also a key part of the proposed modernisation process. The committee has been tasked with recommending measures to strengthen computerisation and support the expansion of digital systems under the e-Courts initiative. Better use of technology could help courts improve access to information, streamline administrative work and make judicial processes more efficient.
Another major objective is to identify the financial support needed to upgrade judicial infrastructure nationwide. Earlier reports said the committee was expected to work towards securing substantial government funding, with estimates ranging from ₹40,000 crore to ₹50,000 crore for a large-scale infrastructure overhaul.
The committee’s interim report marks an important stage in the Supreme Court’s effort to address long-standing infrastructure deficiencies in courts. The roadmap is expected to guide future decisions on investment, technology and the construction of modern judicial facilities.
If implemented effectively, the proposed reforms could significantly strengthen India’s court infrastructure and help create a more efficient and accessible justice delivery system for millions of people across the country.
