England Make Strong Start as Harry Brook Leads 119-Run Win Over Sri Lanka
England opened their three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka with a 119-run victory at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton on September 15. The hosts produced a strong batting display before their bowlers finished the job, giving them a 1-0 lead in the series.
Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field. England made the most of the opportunity, with Jos Buttler providing an aggressive start before Harry Brook took control of the innings.
Buttler scored 80 from 44 balls, hitting eight fours and three sixes. His innings gave England the early momentum they needed, while Brook settled into his role at No. 3.
The England captain then accelerated through the middle and final stages. Brook remained unbeaten on 114 from 49 deliveries, hitting 10 fours and six sixes. He brought up his century in just 42 balls and finished with the highest individual score of the match.
Brook and Buttler added 128 runs for the second wicket, putting England in a strong position. The home side eventually reached 254 for four from their 20 overs, leaving Sri Lanka with a target of 255.
Sri Lanka's Chase Falls Short
Chasing a demanding total, Sri Lanka needed a strong beginning but struggled to build partnerships. England's bowlers kept taking wickets at important moments and prevented the visitors from establishing any sustained momentum.
Dunith Wellalage was Sri Lanka's leading scorer with 33 runs from 21 balls. Dasun Shanaka added 24 from 14 deliveries, but the rest of the batting order could not make a significant contribution.
Sonny Baker was particularly effective for England. The young seamer finished with three wickets for 12 runs from four overs. Jamie Overton also picked up two wickets as the innings came to an end in the 19th over.
Sri Lanka were bowled out for 135, giving England a 119-run win. Brook was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten century.
England Lead the Series
The result gives England a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second T20I is scheduled for September 17 in Cardiff, where Sri Lanka will have an opportunity to level the contest.
The final T20I will be played in Manchester on September 19. The two teams are also scheduled to meet in a three-match ODI series later in the month.
For England, the opening game provided contributions with both bat and ball. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will need a stronger batting performance in Cardiff if they are to keep the series level.
